Raipur: The Department of Surgical Oncology under the Regional Cancer Institute of state-run Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (Pt. JNM) Medical College received three seats of the super-specialisation course M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology.

With it, Pt.JNM Medical College has become the first government medical institute in Central India where this special course is being started.

A letter was received from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, reads, “Central Government has decided to direct the National Medical Commission (NMC) to issue a Letter of Permission (LoP) for three seats of the super-specialization course M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology under the Regional Cancer Institute of Medical College Raipur.”

This important course will be able to start from this academic session itself. It is noteworthy that 6 recognized seats of the postgraduate course M.D. (Radiotherapy) are already being run in the Cancer Department.

NMC Cell Chairman Dr Arvind Neral said that the application for the commencement of this super-specialisation course was submitted at the beginning of last year. The NMC did not issue the LoP mentioning some shortcomings. The college appealed for a full review twice while rectifying the shortcomings and last week Professor of Surgical Oncology Dr. Ashutosh Gupta was personally sent to the NMC New Delhi to present his case as per the directions of the NMC.

Permission was granted for the M.Ch. course after being satisfied with the information about the staff, infrastructure, equipment, departmental facilities and clinical material. Dean Dr Vivek Choudhary has developed the Cancer Department as a Regional Cancer Center and this course has been able to start due to his initiative, inspiration and leadership skills.

Dr Gupta said that this is the first government medical institute in Central India where this special course is being started. With the commencement of this course, cancer patients who require surgery will get better facilities, the state will get super-specialists in Surgical Oncology and medical postgraduate students will get new good opportunities for higher education.
