Centre’s air quality panel revokes GRAP-III curbs after a dip in pollution levels seen in Delhi-NCR, ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: The Central government’s commission for air quality management on Friday rolled back Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-III curbs in Delhi-NCR after a dip in pollution levels was recorded.

GRAP-III and IV were imposed across Delhi-NCR, which schools moving to hybrid mode of education on January 15, after poor air quality levels were seen in the national capital region.

On Thursday, the panel on air quality management lifted stage 4 restrictions under the GRAP, following a drop in pollution levels.

The restrictions had been imposed the previous day due to calm winds, low temperatures, and foggy conditions, which led to the accumulation of pollutants, causing the air quality index to reach 396.

Stage 4 measures included a ban on all construction activities, restrictions on the entry of non-essential polluting trucks, and the mandatory shift of school classes (except for classes 10 and 12) to hybrid mode.

Under Stage 4, non-essential diesel trucks were prohibited from entering Delhi, and Delhi-registered BS-IV and older diesel-heavy goods vehicles were also banned, except for essential services.

During the winter months, Delhi-NCR enforces GRAP restrictions, which categorise air quality into four stages: Stage 1 (Poor, AQI 201-300), Stage 2 (Very Poor, AQI 301-400), Stage 3 (Severe, AQI 401-450), and Stage 4 (Severe Plus, AQI above 450).

The region faces hazardous air quality levels in winter due to a combination of unfavourable meteorological conditions, vehicle emissions, paddy-straw burning, firecrackers, and other local pollution sources.
