Lucknow: The medical fraternity should enhance their communication skills to ensure justice, equity, and ethics, as it is increasingly relevant in modern healthcare, said experts at the inaugural ceremony of the UNESCO-Bioethics Centre at the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) in collaboration with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, on Wednesday.

The centre was inaugurated by Prof Russell D’Souza, head of the ICB UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Melbourne, and RMLIMS director Prof CM Singh. An MoU was also signed with the UNESCO Chair, aligned with the World Federation for Medical Education.

The collaboration aims to introduce structured training in bioethics for both students and faculty, strengthening the foundation of compassionate, ethical healthcare.

RMLIMS director Prof CM Singh said that the goal was to close communication gaps in healthcare and promote ethical decision-making. “We’re not just teaching medicine—we’re teaching how to treat people with dignity. The Centre will start by training faculty to better guide students in communication, patient autonomy, and research ethics.”

Head of Bioethics Centre, Prof Navbir Pasricha, said, “The faculty development programme focused on two major themes: the 3T Paradigm — teach, train, transfer —and the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine. Discussions highlighted how to embed bioethical thinking into the curriculum and how AI’s growing role in healthcare must be handled responsibly.”

The programme was attended by vice-chancellor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University Prof Sanjeev Misra, head of National Academic Program, Indian Program, Prof Ved Prakash Mishra, and head of pathology, KMC Manipal, Prof Mary Mathew.
