Survey highlights low awareness of Shingles among older adults in India, ET HealthWorld

Mumbai: A recent global survey found that 56.6 per cent of Indian participants aged 50 and above have little to no knowledge about shingles, despite more than 90 per cent of adults in this age group carrying the virus and being at risk of developing the disease. Globally, only 44 per cent of respondents were familiar with shingles.

The survey, launched during Shingles Awareness Week (24 February – 2 March 2025), points to limited awareness of age-related health risks, particularly among individuals with chronic conditions. In India, 61 per cent of participants reported living with conditions such as diabetes, COPD, asthma, cardiovascular disease, or chronic kidney disease. However, only 49.8 per cent expressed concern about developing shingles. On a global level, 54 per cent of participants had chronic conditions, but only 13 per cent showed significant concern.

Dr. Shalini Menon, Medical Director at GSK India, noted, “As we age, our natural ability to fight disease diminishes, making us more susceptible to various illnesses like shingles. When aging is combined with chronic conditions, this risk increases. Yet, the survey reveals that many people over 50 remain unaware of these risks.” She emphasized the importance of early awareness, health screenings, and preventive measures such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

The findings also highlight differences in how individuals perceive their health. While 55.7 per cent of Indian respondents over 50 said they feel younger than their actual age—24 per cent by a decade—only 25 per cent reported being very aware of age-related diseases and taking proactive steps to manage them. This gap between perceived and actual health management raises concerns, as a lack of preventive care could increase vulnerability to conditions such as shingles.

The International Federation on Ageing (IFA) has also stressed the need for people over 50 to monitor their health closely, particularly as immune function declines with age. The survey findings underscore the need for increased awareness and proactive steps to support healthy aging.
