Nashik: Six Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the Nashik division, of whom the condition of two is critical, health officials said.
According to the health officials, three patients were undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jalgaon, two in Dhule and one in Nashik. “Four patients from Ahilyanagar district were discharged after successful recovery. No deaths have been recorded in the division so far,” a health official said.
Dr Girish Thakur, the dean of Govt Medical College and Hospital in Jalgaon, said, “Two patients are undergoing treatment in the paediatrics intensive care unit (ICU). Another patient has been shifted out of the ICU. All of them are still not stable.”
In Dhule, where two persons have been admitted, the condition of both is serious. “A resident of Dhule town (48) was admitted to the hospital for treatment about 20 days ago. Another patient, an engineer (44) of Shirpur, was brought to Dhule by his family members in the middle of Feb. He was then admitted to the hospital. He was working in Ujjain,” medical superintendent of GMC Dhule Ajit Pathak said.
Both the patients are on ventilator support. The sixth person was admitted to Nashik after he was diagnosed with GBS on Feb 27. The 78-year-old farmer from Dhule has no complications and was admitted to ICU. His family members, however, shifted him to Nashik for treatment.
GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to demyelination and nerve damage. Its symptoms include muscle weakness or tingling in the legs, arms or face, difficulty in walking or maintaining balance, problems in speaking or swallowing, blurred vision and abnormal heart rate or blood pressure, among others.
