SHRC inspects mental health centre amid complaints, ET HealthWorld

Thiruvananthapuram: Justice Alexander Thomas, chairperson of the state human rights commission (SHRC), conducted an inspection at the Peroorkada Mental Health Centre following complaints about various difficulties faced by the inmates there.

The panel examined the hospital, including its forensic wards and kitchen. Discussions were held with the hospital superintendent and doctors.

Complaints received by the commission indicated that hospital authorities insist on having a bystander while admitting aggressive mental health patients in the hospital. There are also complaints about doctors asking bedridden patients to come in person to collect the medicines, and the practice of providing medicines for only 15 days, causing inconvenience to patients. However, such medicines can be freely purchased at private medical stores. The commission will provide a detailed report to the govt in this regard.

SHRC also evaluated the implementation of its recommendations given to the govt in 2023. TNN
