Thiruvananthapuram: The reproductive medicine department of SAT Hospital has become a refuge for couples without children. Around 500 babies have been born at the hospital through advanced IVF treatment, said health minister Veena George in a statement.
The minister said the govt is making efforts to make the expensive IVF treatment in the private sector accessible to the common people. For this, modern facilities are being set up in infertility treatment clinics, and new positions are being created.
The reproductive medicine department at SAT Hospital is the first IVF initiative under a state govt in the country, which was started in 2012. During this govt’s tenure, advanced facilities like hysteroscopy and incubators have been established at the hospital, she said.
There are IVF theatres, laparoscopy theatres, an IVF lab, and an andrology lab for testing. A cryopreservation system has been set up to store eggs, sperm, and embryos before chemotherapy or radiation for cancer patients. Additionally, a fertility preservation programme for storing eggs for those affected by cancer or other diseases has recently started.
OP services are available from Monday to Saturday. All treatments here adhere to guidelines, including counselling. The aim is to strengthen the reproductive medicine department at SAT Hospital to provide relief to more couples, said the minister.
