Majority of heart disease patients in Gujarat show no symptoms: Health report, ET HealthWorld

Ahmedabad: On Monday, the Health of the Nation report by Apollo Hospitals was released to mark World Health Day, based on data from 25 lakh patients across India, including 2.1 lakh from Gujarat. The report indicated that out of the total patients who came for cardiovascular diseases, 58% were asymptomatic, 46% had calcium deposits, and 25% had obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). Out of the total, 2.5% of the patients were below 40 years of age.

The report also indicated that menopause significantly increased the risk of diabetes, hypertension and multiple co-morbidities among women.

Dr Shashikant Nigam, an internal medicine specialist at Apollo Hospital Ahmedabad, said that in Gujarat-specific data, one thing that stood out was non-alcoholic fatty liver. “About 65% of the total liver diseases were related to fatty liver. Out of that, 85% were non-alcoholic in nature. Thus, the focus is on the rise in lifestyle-related diseases with less exercise and a more sedentary lifestyle,” he said.

“Quality of sleep is also an important aspect of overall health. We have also stressed having vitamin B12 and D, which is generally seen as deficient in patients we see in OPDs.”
