Maharashtra’s first robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy performed in Navi Mumbai, ET HealthWorld

Mumbai: Cancer remains one of the most pressing global health concerns. However, early detection and advancements in medical technology are improving survival rates and bridging gaps in cancer care.

A significant development in breast cancer treatment, the Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (RNSM) with TiLoop implant reconstruction, provides a minimally invasive alternative that enhances cosmetic results. This procedure was recently performed for the first time in Maharashtra at Apollo Cancer Centre, Navi Mumbai.

Dr. Sandip Bipte, a breast surgeon, led the surgery for a 43-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024. Genetic testing revealed a high risk of cancer developing in her other breast.

“The RNSM with TiLoop reconstruction exemplifies the synergy of cutting-edge technology and innovative surgical techniques, offering patients a safer, less invasive, and more effective treatment option,” said Dr Bipte. “By prioritizing both physical and emotional well-being, we aim to empower patients with a renewed sense of confidence and self-assurance.”

The four-hour surgery allowed for the preservation of the skin and nipple while minimizing scarring and reducing recovery time. The patient was discharged the following day and reported a smooth recovery.

Traditionally, breast reconstruction in India has involved more invasive procedures requiring longer hospital stays and leaving scars on different parts of the body. Robotic surgery presents an alternative that reduces trauma and enhances recovery.

“This approach elevates treatment standards while prioritising the dignity and emotional resilience of patients,” said Dr. Suresh H. Advani, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre. “As we embrace such innovations, we must remember that oncology’s crucial role lies in empowering individuals with hope, restoring their sense of self, and transforming fear into courage.”

Experts believe advancements in surgical techniques can significantly improve breast cancer treatment by providing safer options with better physical and emotional outcomes. Breast cancer remains a major health concern in India, particularly among younger women, who account for 48 per cent of cases.
