Hypertension, diabetes now affecting kids, Health News, ET HealthWorld

Lucknow: Diseases like hypertension, diabetes, thyroid and other endocrine issues are increasingly affecting children, conditions that were once common in adults. This worrying trend is linked to sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits, including junk food.

At an awareness programme held at Medanta Hospital on Tuesday, experts discussed these growing health concerns. They stressed if these conditions are diagnosed early, they can be treated successfully in children.

Dr Lokesh Kumar, paediatric endocrinology consultant at Medanta, emphasised that parents should monitor their children’s behaviour and weight gain. “Any sudden changes should be checked by a doctor,” he advised.

Dr Vijya Mohan, another expert, highlighted that a child’s well-being is crucial for their future. In busy urban areas, parents often struggle to find time for their children, making it even more important to be aware of potential health issues. Many children also face congenital diseases, which, if not diagnosed and treated early, can lead to serious problems.

Dr Rakesh Kapoor, medical director at Medanta, assured that advanced treatments with the latest technologies and a team of specialists are available. “We have paediatric services, including robotic surgery, pulmonology, cardiology, endocrinology and more, with special care for newborns and critically ill children,” he added.
