Kolkata: Officials of the Directorate of Drugs Control, West Bengal on Friday conducted searches at two wholesalers of medicines in the Ultadanga-Muchipara area. A number of medical stores were also raided.
During the searches, officials came across several non-standard medicines being sold from the wholesale units. The officials, along with a large contingent of police, also raided several medical stores in Beleghata.
Primarily the owners didn’t allow the drug control officials to enter their shops but after intervention of police the officials were allowed inside the shops.
The officials found medicines used in the treatment of epilepsy and they suspected the quality of the medicines. The samples were sent to the manufacturer and the manufacturing company confirmed that the medicines were fake.
Two retail shops and godowns were seized by drug control officials. The medicines were sourced from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The owner also said he had bought the medicines from a supplier in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Counterfeit medicines were found in an e-pharmacy shop in Uttarpara.
Even that shop had connections with a racket in UP. The state has already sent notices to state govts in UP and Bihar over the recent developments. Several wholesalers in both states are also likely to be probed.
