Visakhapatnam: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising healthcare, but it can never replace a compassionate physician, said Dr Balram Bhargava, former director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Speaking as the chief guest at the graduation ceremony of GITAM Deemed to be University’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) and GITAM Dental College in Visakhapatnam, Dr Bhargava emphasised the irreplaceable value of communication, empathy, and compassion in medical practice.
During the event, 305 graduates from MBBS, BDS, and MDS programs were conferred their degrees. Dr Bhargava praised Indian medical professionals for their globally recognized expertise and highlighted India’s growing reputation as a hub for cost-effective, high-quality medical tourism.
“The doctor-patient relationship is vital for fostering confidence, comfort, and reassurance—key factors in a patient’s recovery,” he stated. “No AI can replicate these human qualities. I encourage you to continually update your medical knowledge, technical expertise, and soft skills like communication and adaptability to stay ahead in an ever-evolving field.”
He reminded the graduates that blending empathy with expertise is what distinguishes healthcare professionals, ensuring not just medical success but also a deeper connection with patients throughout their healing journeys.
GITAM president and Vizag MP, M Sribharath, also addressed the gathering. He urged the graduates to serve rural communities and highlighted GITAM’s focus on integrating modern medical studies with advanced research. Senior officials, including GITAM Vice-Chancellor Prof Errol D’Souza and GIMSR pro vice-chancellor Prof Gitanjali Batmanabane, were present to celebrate the achievements of the new batch of medical professionals.
