Vijayawada: As temperatures continue to soar to record levels, health experts are warning citizens in Vijayawada to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. With heatwave-like conditions prevailing across the state, doctors advise people to avoid stepping out between 10 am and 3 pm, limit physical activity, and stay hydrated.
According to Dr Selva Kumar, drinking at least 4 liters of water per day prevents sunstroke. “Low water percentage in our body can lead to sunstroke,” he said and suggested people to wear light-colored cotton clothes, carry protection gear like caps, eyeglasses, and umbrellas, and avoiding heat-absorbing black clothes.
He further advised people to drink buttermilk and lemon water to maintain electrolyte balance, which can help prevent sunstroke. He warned that children, the elderly, and people with chronic kidney disease or cancer are more prone to sunstroke and should avoid venturing out during the day.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nanda Kishore, president of IMA AP, suggested applying sunscreen to prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin. He advised gym-goers to reduce physical activity, as intense exercise can lead to water loss and sunstroke.
Both doctors emphasize the importance of staying in cooler environments during the daytime and seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms of sunstroke occur, such as nausea, dizziness, and increased heart rate.
