Lucknow: The Richmond Fellowship Society (RFS-India), Lucknow, working in the field of psycho-social rehabilitation of individuals with chronic mental illness, celebrated its 20th annual day function with a workshop on ‘Caregiver’s dilemma! What after me?’, focusing on a relevant question that haunts caregivers: What will happen to their loved one after they are gone?
President of RFS-I and former head of psychiatry department, KGMU, Dr A K Agarwal, highlighted that 13.7% of the population suffered from mental illness of which 2% were afflicted with severe mental illness. Risk of developing mental illness was 10 in 100, he said, adding, mental health professionals and policy makers should explore sustainable solutions to address pressing challenges faced by caregivers of individuals suffering from mental illness.
Psychiatrist Dr Shashi Rai raised concern about mental health issues. Dr Prabhat Sithole, senior psychiatrist and former HOD, psychiatry, KGMU, pointed out that every citizen’s right to protection from mental health risks and good quality care at the highest attainable standards. Former MLA, Vidya Sagar Gupta, urged govt to prioritise mental health rehabilitation as essential service.
Treasurer of society Alok Saxena said RFS-I will remain committed to its mission of eradicating stigma by raising awareness.
