Patna: Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hajipur, has launched a study to find out the treatment of liver cancer. The Indian Council of Medical Research has sanctioned a grant of about Rs 1 crore to the university for the execution of the project.
CUSB environmental sciences dean and the principal investigator of this research project, Rizwanul Haque, told this newspaper that the main aim of this study is to develop Designer T cells from stem cells to treat liver cancer, so prevalent in Bihar and other states of the country.
Other members of the study team include Krishna Prakash from CUSB, Margoob Ahmad and Rakesh Kumar Singh from IGIMS, and Murali Kumarasamy from NIPER.
Giving details of the research project, Haque said that the team would concentrate on producing the novel designer T-cells from induced pluripotent stem cells and checking their effectiveness against liver cancer. This unique opportunity will shed light on a new therapeutic strategy for treatment of liver cancer in human beings and will help in the advancement of available immunotherapies for the cancer. The successful outcome of the research will pave the way for the development of new strategies against the global challenge of cancer, specifically in the solid tumours, Haque added.
