Bone and tissue bank launched at A’bad hospital, Health News, ET HealthWorld

Ahmedabad: Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday launched a bone and tissue bank at the Krishna Shalby Hospital in the city. The hospital authorities said it is one of the largest such banks in terms of volume in the country.

“The bone and tissue bank is registered under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues (Thota) Act. It will provide a full range of frozen and freeze-dried bone grafts to orthopaedic and dental surgeons across the country,” said Dr Vikram Shah, chairman of Shalby Hospitals. “The sterile human bone grafts will reduce the need for autografts, which are typically retrieved from the patient’s own body. By providing a wide variety of bone grafts — from powder for dental use to larger grafts for orthopaedic surgeries — the bank aims to enhance surgical outcomes and reduce patient recovery time.”

The minister also received details pertaining to its operation from the hospital’s senior management. In the future, the hospital intends to extend the bank to tissues such as tendons, skin and amnion, the officials said.
