AIIMS Nagpur unveils advanced sleep lab, Health News, ET HealthWorld

Nagpur: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Sleep Lab to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, focusing on sleep apnea. The facility, formally launched by executive director Dr Prashant P Joshi, is expected to benefit thousands of patients struggling with sleep-related health issues.

“Sleep disorders are often overlooked, but they have a profound impact on overall health. This Sleep Lab will enable early diagnosis and timely intervention, helping patients improve their quality of life and prevent serious complications,” Dr Joshi said.

“By providing access to advanced sleep diagnostics, AIIMS Nagpur ensures that people no longer have to travel long distances for proper diagnosis. This initiative will not only help treat patients but also educate the public about the health risks associated with sleep disorders,” he added.

The Sleep Lab, operating under the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, is led by Dr Sryma PB, Associate Professor. It will conduct polysomnography (sleep studies) to monitor brain waves, heart rate, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and other vital signs while a patient sleeps. This painless overnight test helps detect disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), one of the most serious and widespread conditions.

Studies estimate that 11 per cent of Indian adults, or approximately 104 million people, suffer from OSA. If left untreated, it can lead to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and chronic fatigue, affecting daily productivity and mental well-being.

“Many Indians mistakenly associate snoring with good sleep, when in reality, it can be a sign of serious sleep disorders. With the launch of this lab, we aim to bridge this knowledge gap and offer timely interventions to patients,” Dr Sryma PB said.

The Sleep Lab is particularly significant as obesity—one of the leading risk factors for sleep apnea—continues to rise in India. Sleep disorders remain underdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness and specialized testing facilities.
