Newborn dies during surgery, 5 docs booked for negligence, Health News, ET HealthWorld

Pilibhit: A newborn died at birth at a private hospital in Kheri district following which an FIR was filed on Tuesday against five doctors, including the medical facility’s managing director, for negligence. The family alleged that the cesarean operation took place after a long wait as there was a shortage of medical staff.

Vishal Bajpayi, 39, a resident of Teerth locality in Gola town, said his wife, Nancy Bajpayi, was taken to ‘Jaya Hospital’ on Dec 23 last year. The doctors initially told him that the delivery will be natural but after a few hours, she was advised to undergo a ceasarean operation, without the doctors conducting any medical tests or giving a diagnosis, he alleged.

Bajpayi alleged that the procedure took place at midnight, hours after their advice, due to a shortage of medical support staff. The baby died once the operation was completed following which the doctors — Anshu Verma, A K Agrawal, Farhan Gazi, and Mohammad Shariq — fled the hospital.

He said other hospital staff gave him conflicting answers for the reasons of baby’s death and they referred his wife to the district women’s hospital further medical care.

Bajpayi claimed the doctors at the district hospital found excessive incisions on his wife’s body and sutures which were not properly done, he alleged.

Gola police station SHO Chandra Shekhar said that the MD of the private hospital, Dr Zaib Khan, and four named doctors were booked under BNS section 106 (causing death by negligence) based on a police complaint filed by Bajpayi.

Asked why the police complaint was filed three weeks after the incident, the officer said that man was tending to his ailing wife and lodged the complaint once she recovered.

On being contacted, Dr Zaib Khan, the hospital managing director, said, “This can only be explained by Dr Anshu Verma, head of the medical panel, as I was on a visit to Khutar at that time.”

Dr Anshu Verma told TOI Nancy was referred to the district women’s hospital by a primary health center as she needed to undergo a cesarean operation but she was brought to Jaya Clinic instead. At the hospital, the woman’s husband, who was drunk at that time, was informed that she would need to have a cesarean, the doctor said.

The family members wasted three hours deciding whether she should undergo the surgery. “We then referred the matter for essential tests for a pre-surgery report. As the surgery was conducted, the baby passed meconium (newborn’s stool) in the uterus and aspirated the material. This was why the baby died,” Dr Verma said.
