Kozhikode: Hundreds of patients faced hardships as PG residents at Kozhikode Govt Medical College Hospital (KGMCH) went on an indefinite strike in protest against non-payment of stipend.
Around 650 PG medical students began the indefinite strike. Emergency services, operating theatres, ICUs, and labour rooms were exempted from the strike.
Although department heads at the medical college had made alternate work arrangements, patients at the outpatient department faced long waits.
Students alleged that while stipends have been given to PG residents at other colleges, students at KGMCH were left out pointing to continuing neglect towards the medical college.
College authorities informed students that discussions had been held with health minister and DME. Financial department approval for the stipend bill had been obtained and they were told that distribution will be done soon. The strike was called off by PG residents in the evening following the sanctioning of funds for the stipend.
The Indian Medical Association expressed support for the PG students’ strike.
