New Delhi: While dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss are common, poor oral hygiene can also contribute to serious systemic conditions. Research has linked inadequate oral care to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. GlobalData, a data and analytics company, highlighted the crucial role of oral hygiene in preventing systemic diseases and promoting overall well-being.
On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, observed on March 20, GlobalData noted that poor oral hygiene is also influencing the dental devices market. As more people require restorative treatments like dental implants, crowns, and bridges, market growth is accelerating.
The analytics firm forecasts a 4.6 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the dental implants and abutments sector over the next decade, with the prefabricated crowns and bridges market projected to grow at a 4.3 per cent CAGR during the same period.
In 2024 alone, over 280,000 people in the United States were diagnosed with periodontitis, with nearly 28 per cent requiring dental implants. Periodontal disease — one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss — begins with gingivitis and can progress to severe bone and tissue damage if left untreated.
“Oral health is an essential yet often overlooked component of overall well-being,” said Alexandra Murdoch, Senior Medical Analyst at GlobalData. “World Oral Health Day serves as a vital reminder for individuals to adopt proper oral hygiene habits such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits.”
“Raising awareness about oral hygiene can significantly reduce the burden of dental diseases while simultaneously driving demand for both preventive care and advanced dental solutions,” Murdoch added.
Organised by the FDI World Dental Federation, World Oral Health Day aims to raise awareness about the significance of oral health. This year’s theme, “A Happy Mouth, A Happy Body,” emphasizes the connection between good oral hygiene and overall health. Through educational initiatives and global campaigns, the observance encourages individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to promote effective oral care practices.
World Oral Health Day underscores the importance of consistent oral care routines and improved access to dental services. By prioritizing prevention, individuals can reduce the risk of severe health complications and improve their overall quality of life.
