Lucknow: Virtual ICU training and strengthening district hospitals can be possible solutions to managing the increasing number of critical patients at KGMU, SGPGIMS and RMLIMS, suggested experts at the 64th Foundation Day celebrations of KGMU’s anaesthesia and critical care department.
Prof Tanmay Tiwari from the anaesthesia department said that many critically ill or injured patients require ICU beds and ventilators but some patients have to rely on ambu bags. He suggested setting up ICU-ventilator beds in district hospitals with virtual support from institutions like KGMU.
He explained, “In a virtual ICU setup, specialists at major hospitals can assist doctors at district hospitals in real time using video-conferencing and remote monitoring systems. This allows for expert guidance in diagnosing and treating critical patients, potentially improving access to timely medical care.” KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand said that KGMU’s anaesthesia department is one of the oldest and largest in North India. She mentioned that the department handles 120-150 surgeries daily and has the highest number of MD seats in UP. Plans to introduce a DM course to train more specialists were also announced.
Pro VC Prof Apjeet Kaur spoke about the adoption of new medicines and advanced techniques for anaesthesia. Department head, Prof Monika Kohli presented the annual report, while Prof Sangeeta Khanna discussed the role of anaesthesia in robotic surgeries.
