KGMU’s trauma centre set to undergo major expansion, ET HealthWorld

Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is moving forward with plans to expand its trauma centre after the govt’s expenditure finance committee approved the proposal. This approval brings the project closer to final clearance from the cabinet.

The expansion will add 500 new beds, raising the trauma centre’s total capacity to 650 beds. The project, with a budget of Rs 296 crore, will involve constructing a seven-floor building with a two-storey basement on land cleared by demolishing the Old Nursing Hostel, which is in a dilapidated condition.

Currently, the trauma centre handles 450–500 patients daily with just 150 beds. The expansion aims to ease the strain and improve emergency care services.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand expressed confidence that the cabinet will soon approve funding for the project.

As per the DPR, which could be subject to minor modifications, the ground floor of the new building will feature an 80-bed facility and a radiodiagnostic centre. The first floor will have 60 beds and 12 operating theatres. The third floor will accommodate 80 beds for trauma surgery, and the fourth floor will house 60 beds for orthopaedic patients.

The fifth floor will include a 40-bed ICU and 20 high-dependency unit beds, while the sixth floor will host super-specialty departments such as plastic surgery, vascular surgery, ENT, and ophthalmology. Administrative offices, seminar rooms, and lounges will occupy the seventh floor.

The basement will be designed for parking, diagnostic labs, and other essential services. The facility will also include round-the-clock diagnostic services like MRI, X-rays, ultrasounds, and pathology tests to ensure faster results and better crowd management. Additional features like accommodation for attendants and a dedicated floor for meal preparation will further enhance patient care.

Speaking about the project, Trauma Centre CMS Prof Prem Raj Singh said, “The expansion is a much-needed step to cater to the increasing number of trauma and emergency cases. It will not only provide better infrastructure but also ensure timely and quality treatment for patients coming from across the state.”

Prof Nityanand emphasised that the expansion would provide separate wings for surgical and medical treatments, significantly improving the hospital’s ability to handle emergencies. “Once completed, the trauma centre will set a new standard in emergency care and reinforce KGMU’s reputation as a leading medical institution,” she added.
