A selection of recent work by Detroit-based artist Carson Monahan. Monahan takes seemingly ordinary moments and infuses them with an otherworldly presence, heightening reality and blurring the boundaries between the physical and the spiritual. Symbolism, particularly animal figures, appear throughout, emphasizing the tension between natural instinct and unexpected or mysterious occurrences that call our human intuition and awareness into question. Monahan’s influences range from fantasy, folklore, renaissance and mythology to dreams and the subconscious mind. His paintings similarly engage with themes of mortality, renewal, anxiety, alienation, longing, time, and the concept of impermanence. All images are Courtesy of Monya Rowe Gallery, NY.
